Types of Membership
Active Members
Active Members have paid chapter and Alumnae Association dues and are eligible to hold office, vote, and attend all chapter functions.
Patroness Members
There are two types of Patroness Members. Trained or Affiliated Patroness Members have completed the Fraternity Education program, similar to the Member-in-Training program for collegiate women. They pay chapter dues and have all the privileges of active membership. Regular Patroness Members have not completed the Fraternity Education program. These women do not pay dues, but support the chapter in many ways. They are eligible to attend all fraternity functions but may not vote or hold office. All Patronesses wear the Patroness badge.
Member Laureate
Members Laureate are sisters who were initiated at the collegiate level and have been elevated to the status of Laureate because of their significant contribution to the music profession at an international level.
National Honorary Members
National Honorary Members are women who have achieved international distinction in the music profession and are not initiated members of Sigma Alpha Iota. They are invited to membership by a chapter, which covers all associated fees. They wear the regulation badge.
National Arts Associate
National Arts Associates are men and women who have distinguished themselves in the field of music at the national or international level. They are initiated by collegiate and alumnae chapters, which pay their initiation and badge fees. They wear the National Arts Associate Badge.
Friends of the Arts
Friends of the Arts are men and women who support and are actively involved in the arts locally or regionally. Often, husbands of SAI members are initiated as Friends of the Arts for their ongoing support of their wives' activities in the Fraternity, and many are also musicians themselves. They wear the Friend of the Arts badge.
